Japanese colonialism :: essays research papers
It is interesting to find that only some political economists emphasize the fact that Japanese colonialism in Korea played a large part in the development of a high-growth economy. In both readings we get to see that Japanese colonialism greatly differed from European colonialism. In one way, this is because European colonialism rarely introduced heavy industry into the economy, or even pushed the economy with such a heavy hand. As well, Japan left Korea with a relatively high level of industrialization, not something we commonly see with European colonialism. In Kohli's article we see that Japan came into Korea at the very beginning of its colonial rule and transformed the state, not just when creating speedy economic growth. I liked this article in that Kohli took a very systematic approach to writing it, noting the many steps it took for Korea to industrialize, as well as noting extensively the extent to which Japan played a role. Bruce Cumings' article was different in that it looked more towards Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. In his article, he not only looks at Japan as a colonizer, but also an industrializer. I think that in both of the readings, it is amazing that each of the countries examined were able to industrialize so quickly. Northeast Asia industrialized in only decades, whereas it's taken the rest of the world centuries to do the same. In response to this, it is important to note the argument around the state's role in economic development, what Atul Kohli says is "the extent to which state intervention was 'market conforming' versus 'market distorting' or, to use a related set of concepts, the extent to which the state 'led' rather than 'followed' the market." In each article we see what factors went into each country's economic development. It is interesting to note that Japanese colonial governments were fairly harsh in ruling its colonies, but despite this, its subjects continued to work hard and obey. The stronghold Japan have over Korea was immense. Even wealthy landowners, the Yangban elite, were controlled by the state, and any political organizations and national movements that threatened the authoritarian state were squashed. Possible the fact that both Korea and Taiwan, as well as Japan, were fairly small countries amounted for something when struggling to industrialize late. Kohli suggests that land area might well be a factor in successful colonization. This is, he says, is one of the reasons for the lack of problems the Japanese had in establishing authority between the center in Seoul and the periphery. In Bruce Cumings' article he illustrates that Korea and Taiwan became "receptacles for declining Japanese industries." It is still interesting to see that Korea and Taiwan managed to industrialize so fast

BLK Enjoy the Dark Side of Water Essay
BLK is the first ever fulvic- enhanced all natural mineral water. This is a recent item that has recently entered the market. This product derives from a proprietary blend of fulvic acid which is a yellow brown substance. It is a derivative of plant matter that is mined from an 80 million year old source deep within the earth. Naturally black in color, the formula binds to the molecules of pure Canadian spring water giving BLK its signature black color, with no artificial dyes, coloring, or additives. Fulvic acid is critical in the growth of plant life, helping the transportation and absorption of nutrients. Fulvic acidââ¬â¢s small molecular structure allows for the fast absorption of over 77 different trace minerals and elements, powerful electrolytes, and antioxidants that are overall good for the body. BLK is distributed by BLK Enterprises LLC in New York, NY. It is a private company categorized under Water Distilled Manufacturers. It was established in 2011 and incorporated in New York. Product Decision As a group we wanted to choose a product that was different and nutrious and yet at the same time was astetically appealing to the eye of the consumer. We found BLK water to be a product that met these needs. One of our group members knew of this product and introduced it to our group and we all agreed that it would be a great product to learn about as 3 out of 4 of us had never heard of or come across this product. After our group sampled this product and learned more about it we were all curious as to why this product was not more widely known or advertised to become more popular. Research Objectives Our group will be using the five following criteriaââ¬â¢s to evaluate the product as it will help us to explore the BLK Water in order to determine if the product is a success or failure in the competitive market. To have a successful product in the market, we question BLKââ¬â¢s attributes based on the following: A) Customer Interpretation: evaluative reactions ( perception) B) Product packaging/ Product appearance: package design, size, price, color, bottle volume C) Advertisements: T.V, events, word of mouth, celebrity endorsements, D) Distribution: grocery stores and specialty stores E) Market Segmentation: who are the main customers that are trying to be reached? Research Hypothesis BLK Water is a successful company. This water is a new emerging phenomenon that is sweeping its way across shelves nationwide. However, due to a major lack in marketing, we believe that this product is a failure on the overall business model and will not catch on like the other major bottled water companies such as Vitamin Water, Smart Water, Evian, or Fiji. We believe that BLK can do much better if they promote their product through different channels. Methodology A) In order to accomplish the previous section mentioned, we will need to research the product and locate it, determining the places that the product is most sold at: * Location of the product- we found this product to be available at all grocery stores, but not available at convenience stores, coffee shops, or fitness centers. * Placement of the product- BLK water is displayed in grocery stores along with all other popular waters and is lacking any display that really makes it stand out to the consumer. * Price- The price of BLK water is slightly higher than regular bottled water such as deer park, being about one dollar more; But is in the average price range of specialty waters such as Figi and Vitamin Water. Therefore we agree that the price is acceptable for the product. B) Take notes on our first reaction with the product in the grocery store environment. We all the same similar shocking reaction when we first found BLK Water in the grocery store which we will be explaining in our presentation. C) Do some research, then based on these, form hypotheses of the product to discuss why the product may or may not be doing well in the bottled water market. D) Develop surveys and distribute to the public using the following information: * Male/ female * Occupation * Age * Income * Would they consider buying the product? * Would they try the product? * Would they buy the product? * This will allow us to have an overall idea of what the consumers think of the product, thus providing us with a better understanding of the customersââ¬â¢ viewpoint. E) Collect data and compile all survey results- completed 11/13/2012 F) Review data and interpret the product G) Conclusion about the product Questionnaire Design We distributed this to our whole Marketing Research 342 class. This is our cover from our questionnaire. We asked 14 different questions in hopes to understand the potential customer basis. In our questionnaire, we questioned the product. We mainly focused on the waterââ¬â¢s appearance. We used interval scales on our survey asking the question on a 1-5 non-forced scale. The participants could rate how they felt about the question 1 being definitely not and 5 being most definitely and 3 being neutral. For our demographics we asked questions regarding gender which was a simple, male/female choice, income, age, and education in a range format, which we asked at the end of our survey as these are sensitive questions and participants are not always willing to share these answers with strangers. Our screening question was our first question of the survey which would tell us the Here is a copy of our actual survey we used. The Han Dynasty governed China for more than four hundred years. It rose to power in 206 BC and stayed until 220 AC. The Han Dynasty played a vital role in Chinaââ¬â¢s development. This dynasty pioneered a political system and social structure that lasted in China for almost 2,000 years. The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire were considered two of the most strongest civilizations at that time. The Roman Empire lasted from 27 BC to 393 AD. This empire changed the way Romans lived. The Romans made rapid advancements in science and technology. Both of these civilizations successfully took control of their countries. While they both have an abundant amount of similarities, they is an overwhelming amount of differences that set these two empiresâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Chinese Empire had always been more together than the Roman Empire, and each province being considered a part of the whole Empire, while Romeââ¬â¢s empire was run by a governor. In Rome, the political system was based on the relationship between the Senate and the Emperor. The position of the Emperor was not always hereditary. The Senate represented a opposition to the Emperorââ¬â¢s power. A province was typically watched over by a Governor and a small staff and army, making the Roman Empire almost colonial. However, under the rule of Hadrian, Rome would no longer be split up into these two distinctions. The legal systems between the two empires differed. Rome had an adversarial system, where the judge is neutral, while in China, the prosecutor and judge were normally the same person. The Roman society was essentially relationships that were governed by laws and courts. The Roman law had a large presence in all affairs of the cities. The basis of the Roman society, as it was stated in the laws, is that the head of the family is the pater familias who had power over everyone. In social terms, Rome was a society which gave women more rights than in China. Roman women were considered free and had some control over their wealth and property. The Roman society was a hierarchical society. Each social group had well defined roles and birth played a part in

The Curriculum Of A Preschool Classroom - 973 Words
Reading Response Introduction This weekââ¬â¢s article provided interesting insight into science curriculum in a preschool classroom. I believe that children experience scientific concepts all around them every day, for example, weather and shadows, and that they are looking for information and the language to understand these concepts. This article furthered my belief that preschool children are capable of learning and exploring abstract scientific concepts. Furthermore, this articles supported my beliefs that although capable of understanding abstract concepts, preschoolers require teacher guided support in learning these concepts, as they often do not yet have the language require to explain the phenomenonââ¬â¢s they see happening. Synopsis In this article Peterson and French (2008) take an in-depth look at the ââ¬Å"ways in which preschool teachers support the development of childrenââ¬â¢s explanatory language through science inquiryâ⬠(p. 395). Peterson and French (2008) used a Head Start center that used the ScienceStart curriculum for their study (p. 395). The study was conducted on the concept of colour mixing over the course of 5 weeks. The sessions were video tapped in order to analyze the teachers facilitation of the sessions as well 47 children participate in pre and post assessments regarding their explanatory language (Peterson French, 2008). Pumpkin Patch Case Analysis - 1319 Words
The main problem that challenged Pumpkin Patch and resulted in its collapse was ââ¬Å"falling salesâ⬠, which resulted in insurmountable debts and an inability to front the capital needed to rectify their financial situation (Koehn, 2016). Falling sales will continue to threaten the company in its current situation if it is unable to compete in the market, addressing consumers demands and differentiating their offering (Kato, 2011). However, competing in this market is becoming increasingly difficult with the evolution of department stores and the influx of childrenââ¬â¢s retail businesses in Australia (2965) increasingly servicing consumers demand for a value/quality deal due to the disposable nature of childrenââ¬â¢s clothing (Magner, 2017; Koehn,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Whilst there are a plethora of consumer trends that contributed to he situation Pumpkin Patch faced, there are a select few intertwined factors that contributed to the failure of the company. 1. Competition The biggest contributor to the decline in sales for Pumpkin Patch was fierce competition, which drove customers to alternate retailers and made other weaknesses more vulnerable, ultimately resulting in the companyââ¬â¢s exit from the market. Within the industry medium competition exists, with retailers competing on price, fashion, quality, location and marketing (Magner, 2017). Externally, the company also faced competition from department stores, pure-play online retailers and hand-me-downs (Magner, 2017). Pumpkin Patch mostly performed well against other direct compotators, with the exception of niche online retailers that offer more unique products for a similar price (Magner, 2017; Koehn, 2016). However, Pumpkin Patch was severely impacted by superior pricing efforts by external competitors, namely, department stores such as K-Mart, Target, Big W and Zara Kids, providing cheaper alternatives for price-conscious parents (Koehn, 2016; Magner, 2017; Hobday, 2017). The market is highly segmented regarding price with companies rivalling competitors with similar pricing strategies, suchShow MoreRelatedPumpkin Patch Case Analysis3352 Words à |à 14 Pages1. Coachella One of my favorite events is the Coachella Music Festival, a music fans ultimate adventure. My friend Isaac and I had planned our trip for months. The event was two days, split up because of the hundreds of bands playing. We will write a custom essay sample on Coachella or any similar topic only for you Order Now We bought our ticket months in advance for one day. The line-up for that day was amazing. The line up consisted of: Radio Head, Pixies, Kraftwerk, Rapture, Death Cab for Cutie, and many more. If you love alternative music, this is it. We also had planned to stay the night, so we pre-booked a room in hotel nearby. Our destination was Indio California, near Palm Springs. The drive from San Jose to Indio was about 427 miles. We headed out early morning, stopped a couple times to use the restroom and refuel. Driving on Highway 10, was mostly desert. The only interesting configurations worth gazing were the plain white wind mills. Hundreds lined up, across acres of desert land. Some of the giant windmills propelled with the slight dry wind. We finally had arrived and it felt like we stepped into a depleted tropical land. Luckily, the hotel we stayed in included a swimming pool! It was the day of the event, so we made sure to dress accordingly. We also made sure to bring plenty of water. The parking area was a chaotic scrabble of vehicles. The walk to the gates was a good 10 minutes. This was only the beginning; this event was spread out onto 90 acres. No wonder, GoldenVoice (Coachella Organizers) held event in this location; Empire Polo Club. The first idea that came to mind was to plan our day according to music events itinerary. A mass of 100,000 people would be diverged among the Polo Fields. Coachellaââ¬â¢s map out of event accommodated all; with multiple stages, international food stands, alcohol and beverage stands, in door lounges to cool off, numerous tents with DJââ¬â¢s, art installations, Coachella souvenir stands, porta potties in large quantities, ATMs, Security, and First Aide stands. The lines were a quarter mile long, or more for all stands. At this point, my friend Isaac and I decided we would cool off with a Heineken. Next we took our place in line to get a bite to eat. Of course everything is overpriced, since it is a music concert. How to cite Coachella, Essay examples
